Why We Need the Uniform 39272 Zip Code in Byram, MS

Our City of Byram, Mississippi reincorporated in June 2009, nearly six years ago, after initially incorporating in 1870 and unincorporating during the Great Depression under FDR. Some who live here, though, may have the proper Byram zip code of 39272, but the rest have either Jackson 39212, Raymond 39154, or Terry 39170. This causes unnecessary problems. For example, when I order from Walmart online, they calculate my sales tax at the eight percent Jackson rate (since our house is in the Jackson 39212 zip code) instead of the seven percent rate it should be. When I try to get a car insurance quote online, they ask what zip code your car is parked in at night, and I have to say 39212, which is Jackson, which has a higher crime rate, which gives us a higher insurance rate. the list of problems and annoyances could go on and on.

The proper way for the necessary changes to be made is for the Mayor to contact the United States Postal Service and ask them to make everyone within the city limits of Byram, MS 39272. Our original Mayor since reincorporation, Nick Tremonte (who was Mayor illegally, since he lived outside the city limits) never requested the change, and as far as anyone knows, the current Mayor, Richard White, has also failed to do so.

Sure, business owners would have to have their stationery, tickets, etc., reprinted, but it would be a one-time thing. Overall, the change would be good for everyone who resides in or owns a business in Byram. But will it ever be done? Or will the current administration only ever bother to take action on it if they might be in danger of losing their jobs? There's a lot to be said for electing people who will proactively do the right thing, rather than having to feel the heat before they will ever see the light.
